Music Paul Likes

Note: This is a "beta" version of this page set up at this time to check links, etc. If you are interested in participating in this program when it becomes available, please use the Songwranglers.com(tm) contact page to express your interest, and we will contact you when the program is up and running.

This page describes the favorite genres and song styles of Paul Race, lead "Songspector" of our Songspection feature. It is intented only to give you an idea of what songs Paul feels most qualified to review. The reason we call it "Music Paul Likes" is that as we add other reviewers, they're likely to have different tastes, and you may request working with one of them instead.

This page is not intended to insult anybody or make anyone feel I don't want to hear your songs. Rather, it is an admission of my personal limitations - there are some kinds of music that I don't really "get" well enough to offer constructive criticism. I may actually enjoy some examples of those genres, but if I made any comments on them, I'd be more likely to cause harm than good.

In other words, our mutual success in this endeavor will be more likely if you send me songs that I'm equipped to judge. So, while this list isn't exclusive, it is meant to give you an idea of whether our partnership is likely to succeed.

I especially love songs that are thoughtful or that move me. Fast songs with cohesive, clever, original lyrics are good, too. More specifically:

  • I grew up listening to classic singer/songwriters like Noel Stookey, James Taylor, Bob Dylan, Judy Collins, Gordon Lightfoot, Cat Stevens, Joni Mitchel, Neil Young, and Carole King.

  • In my Rock Band days, we enjoyed classic rock songs by groups like Chicago (early), Blood Sweat & Tears, Grand Funk (late), Doobies, and the Eagles (after Joe Walsh joined).

  • I have had friends who sang in the classic and Outlaw Country veins, like Johnny Cash, Clint Black, Alan Jackson, and the Highwaymen. So I can usually get a handle on those styles.

  • In my Jesus Music/Gospel/CCM days, I was a fan of Acts, Norman, Stonehill, Wayne Watson, Michael Card, etc.

  • I also enjoy songs by thoughtful artists in the Alternative movement and related genres. Yes, "Ironic," "Iris," and "I Used to Rule the World" are all considered "hokey" today, but I list those to give you an idea of what I mean.

  • As a long-time Worship leader, I appreciate well-written non-cliched Worship songs as well, though frankly they seem to be in the minority these days.

I enjoy a lot of music that is outside of those categories, as well, including a certain number than come out of the "pop" genre. If you send me a song and I don't feel I can do it justice, I'll tell you so, no harm no foul.

Songs I Don't Want to Hear - That said, there are some kinds of music I literally do not know enough about to give a fair opinion of individual songs in that genre. These include any kind of music in which the lyrics are screamed more than sung. I have friends who play Heavy Metal, Thrash, and a dozen related styles, and they understand that I'm not judging their personal worth or even their taste in music when I explain that I don't "get" what they do any more than they "get" my banjo-driven Folk music.

I also will also automatically block anyone who sends me songs with F-bombs or sexually explicit lyrics. If you don't waste my time, I won't waste yours.

If you have a song that may or may not "work" for this program, go ahead and submit it. If you get it in early enough for the preliminary audition and I don't feel like I can do it justice, I'll let you know.
